Update: An Insolent Child

Written by mom - 12 Comments

Guess what? The child that I talked about in “An Insolent Child Part II” has recently been evaluated by a psychologist and diagnosed with ADHD. For the past couple of months he has been wearing a Daytrana patch (this is the first patch medicine for kids with ADHD; technically it’s a methylphenidate, or Ritalin, transdermal [...]

Brain Development in Kids

Written by dad - 2 Comments

This is pretty interesting… A recent study suggests that “some of the brain’s basic building blocks for learning are nearing adult levels by age 11 or 12.” Of course, the portion of the brain responsible for things like impulse control and moral judgment doesn’t mature until sometime in the early 20s. After puberty, brain development [...]

Written by dad - 5 Comments

Yesterday afternoon our three youngest learned an important lesson: don’t mess with fire ants. We’ve told them this repeatedly in the past, but sometimes you just have to learn a lesson on your own…

Strep Throat – The Battle Rages On

Written by dad - Leave a Comment

After two rounds of antibiotics, including ten days each on amoxicillin and Omnicef, Son #1 still wasn’t back to his old self. Thus, my lovely and talented wife took him back to the doctor. Guess what? He still has strep! So now he’s in the midst of a Zithromax Z-PAK.

Smoking Decreases Odds of Having a Boy?

Written by dad - 2 Comments

According to researchers in Great Britain, smoking decreases the chance of having a male baby by as much as half. Interestingly, the researchers found that that both active smoking and second-hand smoke play a role. While the exact reason for this remains unknown, it appears that the chemicals in cigarette smoke can stop male embyros [...]

Strep Throat – The Saga Continues

Written by dad - 2 Comments

Ugh. After having Son #1 and Son #3 diagnosed with strep last week, we picked up their antibiotics (Amoxicillin) and hoped for the best. Unfortunately, Son #1 hasn’t really responded to the antibiotics, so yesterday they switched his prescription. He’s now on Omnicef for the next ten days. Hopefully this will knock it out.

Strep Throat Rears its Ugly Head – Again

Written by dad - Leave a Comment

Son #1 had strep throat (i.e., Streptococcal pharyngitis) back in January, and guess what? We just found out that he has it again. We actually found out on Thursday, so he’s on the mend, but still feeling rundown. The silver lining here is that Son #3 wasn’t feeling well about a week ago, but then [...]

Summer Weight Gain in School Kids

Written by dad - 3 Comments

This is interesting… For all the flak that public schools take over their meal programs, reducing the frequency of physical education classes, etc., it seems that they may be doing a better job than the average parent when it comes to keeping kids healthy. Indeed, a recent study revealed that 5 and 6 year olds [...]

How Safe are Cough and Cold Medicines for Kids?

Written by dad - 3 Comments

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) intends to review the safety of over-the-counter cough and cold medicines for toddlers and preschoolers. This action is being taken in response to a petition filed by Baltimore public health officials this past week. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has been warning parents about the safety of [...]

Sleep Less, Weigh More?

Written by dad - 4 Comments

Here’s an interesting tidbit… It seems that kids who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to be overweight and have higher BMIs than those who get more. Sleep experts recommend that kids ages 5 to 12 sleep for 10 or 11 hours a night, and adolescents sleep for 8 to 9 hours. However, researchers [...]
