MRSA Outbreak in Schools

Written by dad - One Comment

Uh-oh… All 21 school buildings in Bedford County, VA have been closed down and are being sanitized after a 17 year old student died from methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MRSA is a form of a common bacteria that has evolved resistance to all “first-line” antibiotics. Previously restricted to hospitals and clinics, MRSA is increasingly turning [...]

Written by dad - 3 Comments

According to a recent study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, children who are praised for being intelligent (as in “You’re so smart…”) are can become highly sensitive to failure, making them less likely to take risks and more likely to give up when faced with a difficult challenge. So next time [...]

Lost Retainer Resurfaces (Just in the Nick of Time)

Written by mom - One Comment

Just the other day, we finally gave up looking for Son #1′s lost retainer. Unfortunately, it looked like it was time to bite the bullet and pony up a wad of cash for a new one. I got on the phone with the orthodontist’s office to make the appointment. As I was funneled through their [...]

Kids and Braces: Losing a Retainer

Written by dad - 2 Comments

Well, this is certainly a bummer… After nearly having nearly lost it on vacation this past summer, it appears that the world’s luckiest retainer has gone on the lam. About a week ago we noticed that Son #1 was hadn’t put in his retainer at bedtime. As it turns out, he couldn’t find it — [...]

Glasses for a Five Year Old – The Resolution

Written by mom - 5 Comments

I wrote the other day about the trials and tribulations associated with our five year old’s glasses. A number of commenters suggested that we consider changing doctors, and they’ll be please to know that’s exactly what we did. If you haven’t read Part 1, be sure to do so. If you’ve already read that, then [...]

According to an article in USA Today, Publix (a grocery chain in the southeast) will begin offering seven “popular” antibiotics for free to anyone with a prescription, even if their insurance would otherwise pay for it. Kids and Braces: The World’s Luckiest Retainer

Written by dad - 5 Comments

I’ve written in the past about how Son #1, currently nine years old, had “early orthodontic intervention” back when he was eight. While he was supposedly going to need his braces for up to a year and a half, he ended up getting them off after just six months, and has been in a retainer [...]

Written by dad - 21 Comments

According to a recent CNN/Health article, a growing number of U.S. parents are deciding against circumcising their sons. Apparently, the circumcision rate peaked at nearly 90% in the 1960s and began dropping in the 1970s. By 2004, 57% of all male newborns in the U.S. were circumcised. Interestingly, immigration patterns have played the biggest role [...]

Nervous Tics in a Nine Year Old Boy

Written by dad - 44 Comments

Over the years, our nine year old son has gone through short stretches where he develops a nervous tic of sorts — frequent, rapid, and involuntary blinking. In general, this has come on out of nowhere, and then disappeared within a few weeks. However, it came back again this spring/summer and has been both more [...]
