Check Out “Man vs. Wild”
Well, we have a new favorite TV show in our house… It’s called Man vs. Wild, and it airs on Discovery. In short, this show chronicles the exploits of Bear Grylls, who is a mountaineer, adventurer, and former member of the British Special Air Service.
In the show, Grylls intentionally “strands himself in popular wilderness destinations where tourists often find themselves lost or in danger. Once there he finds his way back to civilization, demonstrating local survival techniques along the way.” Travelling with a two-man camera crew that is under strict instructions not to help him unless he is in a “fatal situation,” Grylls eats raw meat and live fish, fends off hypothermia, and drinks his own urine to survive.
As disgusting as this all sounds, it’s really a fascinating show, and the boys have already learned a lot from it. Sure, it’s not terribly practical knowledge, but still… We now have our DVR set up catch all the episodes that we’ve missed.

Just ran across the show for the first time two weeks ago and also have it added to my DVR. Great show and I have learned a lot as well, while not knowledge you can use on a daily basis I’m certain I’ll use some of it at one point in time.
Comment by MFJ — Jul 10th 2007 @ 1:32 pmMy husband loves that show. It was a while before we learned what his name was. Ever since then, I have a tough time taking a guy called “Bear Grylls” seriously. Even if he did climb Everest.
Comment by Jordan (MamaBlogga) — Jul 12th 2007 @ 9:29 amMy little girl, age 7, LOVES this show… watches it over and over… She’s miss priss, so I was amazed that she like the rough and tumble of the show… but she does!

My family generally will watch a half hour of television before bedtimes. Dad and I are sometimes challenged to find shows we can watch with the kids in the room and feel fairly safe with the Discovery Channel. We love Man vs. Wild but the boys’ favorite is still Dirty Jobs.
Comment by Amy — Jul 17th 2007 @ 11:51 amThere is another show along the same lines but there is no camera crew. Survivorman airs on Discovery and The Science Channel. The host, Les Stroud, must survive for a week in the chosen location, most of the time without proper supplies. He also has to carry his camera equipment and setup all the shots himself. It is a pretty good show.
Comment by Mac — Jul 18th 2007 @ 11:33 amIs there any way someone could share the Man vs
Wild episodes from their DVR? I would be so grateful, as Discovery is going to delete scenes in the 1st 2 seasons, before releasing a dvd set. They also pulled all of their single episode dvds from their site and made everyone else do it too, like amazon.
thanks so much,
