Gameboy Games and Washing Machines

Written by dad - 4 Comments

Breaking news…. Gameboy games can survive a trip through the washer (and dryer).

Over the weekend, Son #3 wanted to bring some extra Gameboy games when we went out for the day. Thus, he tucked them in one of the big pockets in my carpenter shorts. I knew this wasn’t a good idea, but I made a mental note not to forget they were in there. Guess what? I forgot. Last night when I came home from work, he was lamenting that he couldn’t find his Pokemon Mystery Red Dungeon Rescue Team cartridge. Remembering what had transpired, my heart sank.

Sure enough, both his Pokemon cartridge and his Matchbox Missions cartridge had gone through the wash. And Pokemon also went through the dryer… The horror!

The good news from all of this is that neither game is any worse for the wear. To be honest, I’m surprised that it took this long for us to discover that Gameboy games are waterproof.

  1. I have no doubt that Nintendo designed them that way on purpose…

  2. Well, kudos to Nintendo, then. Water-susceptible game cartridges would be a great way to generate repeat sales.

  3. I’m happy to hear that the games are waterproof, unfortunately we’ve learned from experience that the actual system is not. My son, unwilling to but the gameboy down for even a second, attempted to take it to the bathroom with him and ended up dropping it in the toilet. We tried to disinfect it and dry it out, but it never worked the same again.

  4. Never had a Gameboy go in the washing machine, but my youngest son’s cell phone did…and dryer too! It still worked, although the screen didn’t fair quite as well.

I just stumbled onto this site and love all the info! I’m a single mom of 3 young men and we have definitely had our adventures!! I love it!
