Strep Throat – The Battle Rages On

Written by dad - Leave a Comment

After two rounds of antibiotics, including ten days each on amoxicillin and Omnicef, Son #1 still wasn’t back to his old self. Thus, my lovely and talented wife took him back to the doctor. Guess what? He still has strep! So now he’s in the midst of a Zithromax Z-PAK.

His main problem at this point is that he’s been feeling sick to his stomach. This isn’t terribly surprising when you consider all of the good bacteria in his body must be long gone at this point from the antibiotic cocktail to which he’s been subjected. We’ve been doing our best to get things jump-started for him by feeding him yogurt with live acidophilus cultures, but he’s still feeling a bit down and out.

But wait… It gets better… Son #3 is still positive, as well. As you may or may not recall, he had already gone asymptomatic before we realized that he was strep positive, so we had no real way of knowing whether or not the antibiotics were working. But since the amoxicillin didn’t work on Son #1, and since we assumed that they had the same strain, we decided we should get him re-checked as well. So now he’s on Omnicef just like big brother, and will need yet another strep test before he gets the all clear. Ugh.

Thankfully it hasn’t spread beyond the two of them. We’ve now tossed out their toothbrushes (again) and changed everyone’s bedding (again) to avoid re-infection. Hopefully we’ve turned the corner, although it’s conceivable that Son #3 will need a Z-PAK just like big brother before this is all over with.
