He's going to treasure it and take really good care of it since he bought it with his own money. I still have the first bicycle I bought with my own money in high school. I love the damned thing too much to get rid of it even though it takes up too much closet space. It's still useable and just looking at it brings back a lot of memories for me. That’s great! Tell him congratulations; that is no small feat to save up for at his age. Hell, it's no small feat to save up for at my age! He must be very stoked about getting it. Chances are very good that he will take much better care of it than he would have with either your camera or your wife's camera, since he had to save up for it himself and he knows just how tough it was to get it.
