Preschool Registration Madness

Written by mom - 7 Comments

It’s 4:22 am and I’m here waiting to sign up Son #4 for preschool. I’m #23 on the unofficial sign-up list. A volunteer is expected to arrive at 5 am to take the official sign ups with registration starting at 8 am. This approach was meant to stave off any “camping out” in the parking lot. When I rolled out of bed at 4 am, I suspected that there would be people already waiting to sign up. I’m curious to know what time the first person on the list arrived here. I just talked to a mom who arrived at 3 am. Yikes! People really love our preschool, no doubt. At what point do you say, “Enough is enough”? I’m sure there were people here even earlier…

I wonder how many of these people are waiting to sign up for the class I want for my son? I’ve decided to put him in a three day per week class. Next year it will be just he and I at home and I think, for the sake of both of us, he needs at least three days to get away from me and play with other children. I also plan to volunteer one day a week in Son #3’s Kindergarten class. That still leaves me with two days to get things done around the house and to take a breath now and then. Of course, the three day per week two year old class is one of the most popular classes. It’s time to line up and no one is enforcing the unofficial sign up list. I guess I will. I wonder how this will turn out…

Update: It’s now 2:30 in the afternoon. I just found out from the director of our preschool that Son #4 has made it into the 3 day/week 2 yrs. old class. Hallelujah!!! I did end up being the “Unofficial Unofficial List Master” Everybody was very compliant as I herded them into their place in line, and I will sheepishly admit that I felt a little powerful with all these people following my directions. I also heard that at least two Dads slept in their cars overnight. Not my thing, I must say, and yet my son is still going to school with their children. Ha! Ha! Who am I kidding? I know I’ll be earlier for registration next year, maybe 3 am. I know I can do better than #23!!!
