Catholic Church Urges More Kids in India
While the North Koreans are paying people to have kids, it seems that the Catholic Church is taking a different approach in southern India… The percentage of Christians in general and (apparently) Catholics in particular has been falling in the southern state of Kerala, and Church leaders want to reverse the trend. Their solution? Simple. Browbeat people into having as many kids as they can afford. In a letter to parishioners in the region, Cardinal Mar Varkey stated that “there has been a growing feeling that children are a nuisance to pleasurable life. Even those who have the resources do not beget for selfish reasons.” So there you have it. If you choose not to have kids (or choose to have fewer than you can afford), then you’re just being selfish.
While I’m (obviously) not against having kids, I hardly think it’s a good idea to push people to have kids out of a sense of obligation.
