FluMist Influenza Vaccine is Effective in Kids

Written by dad - One Comment

Guess what? FluMist (the nasal spray version of the flu vaccine) seems to work in kids… A recent study by MedImmune, Inc. revealed that vaccination of school-aged children with FluMist made them less prone to flu-like illnesses, and resulted in lower prescription and non-prescription drug use, lower school absentee rates, and fewer missed workdays for adults in the household. In somewhat more concrete terms, children that received the FluMist vaccine had 93% fewer cases of influenza than kids who received a placebo. There is also evidence that FluMist is well tolerated and effective in 12-15 month olds when administered in combination with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) and varicella (i.e., chicken pox) vaccines. So… If your kids have a needle aversion (and whose kids don’t?), it looks like you may have an alternative when it comes to getting a flu shot.
