When my older kids were babies, doctors recommended sedating them at night if they couldn't/would't fall asleep. We never did it, though friends did.
In terms of road trips, a nudgy, difficult kid can easily bother the driver to a level when driving concentration is impaired, which endangers everyone. So, I'd recommend sedating the kid for safe driving.

I've done a time or two, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to work its sleepy magic on my kids. It doesn't make them hyper, but I don't notice them sleeping more with it, either. I don't have an ethical problem with doing that; I think under certain circumstances it's kinder to everyone if the kid can sleep a little better/longer/deeper.

When my father was sick (only months to live) and we were making a 700 mile trip one way every couple of weeks with a 1 year old and a 2 year old... benedryl was my friend. We usually left at 4am and they would wake up as we put them in the car. I would then give them some benedryl. It gave us a couple of hours of peace and quiet. I even used it once when we had to drive that trip in the afternoon. I did know it did not cause my kids to be wired before doing this.
