Eight Year Olds and Real Estate
If you happen to follow fivecentnickel.com, then you almost certainly know that we’re moving. Now that our house is on the market, we’re heading out of town to look at property on the other end. When he heard about this, our eight year old was thrilled. The first thing he asked was whether or not he’ll get his own room in the new house (currently our 4, 6, and 8 year olds share a room). When I told him that we won’t know until we figure out which house we’re going to buy, he asked if we’ll have a forest in our backyard. Again, I told him that we’re not sure. His response? “Well, I really want both, but if I can only have one, I want the forest.” And to think we’ve been focusing on trivial little things like school districts and commute times as opposed to the presence (or absence) of a forest in the backyard!

When I was growing up we had a forest in the back yard, and it was great! We cut some trails to a boulder field, and built a bridge over a brook that ran through it. My uncle got married on that bridge. Now that I think of it, both houses I lived in as a young child had a forest in the back yard, although there was no brook or boulder field behind the second house.
Comment by Blaine Moore — Apr 6th 2006 @ 7:44 amI just moved from our house with a “forest” and I find that is what I miss the most here at the new house. I vote with your son……forego everything else for the forest!!
