And Now He’s Four – Birthday Party Revisited

Written by dad - 3 Comments

Well, the birthday party went off without a hitch, and our three year old is now a four year old. My wife wrote the other day about some of her ideas for the party, and I have to say that she was spot on. Well, except for the fact that she let our son pick [...]

Raising Cain

Written by dad - Leave a Comment

Last night we ran across a fascinating show called “Raising Cain: Boys in Focus” on PBS. Hosted by a child psychologist, it’s a documentary based on the premise that “America’s boys are in trouble.” It was very enlightening and, at times, shocking and surprising. If you’re out there raising boys and you missed it the [...]

Harry Potter Keeps Kids Safe

Written by dad - Leave a Comment

Protego! British researchers recently reported in the British Medical Journal that emergency room visits dropped markedly on the weekends immediately following the release of the two most recent Harry Potter books (“The Order of the Phoenix” and “The Half-Blood Prince“). Apparently one of the study’s authors “conjured up the original idea” when he returned home [...]

Father Rolls Over, Kills Sleeping Baby

Written by dad - 2 Comments

Here’s an extremely sad story… A three week old baby in Deland, Florida recently died in his parents’ bed when his father rolled over on him. Apparently Mom and Dad went to sleep around 12:30 AM and awoke at 5:00 AM to find that their baby wasn’t breathing. Dad then performed CPR until the paramedics [...]

Birthday Party Ideas

Written by mom - 4 Comments

We’re gearing up for our son’s fourth birthday party this weekend. He chose ‘transportation’ as a theme, involving lots of trains, planes, boats and cars. So we’ve been trying to come up with ideas for party activities. For one quiet activity, my husband will read The Little Engine that Could and Jay Jay the Jet [...]

Home Alone

Written by dad - One Comment

I just sent “Home Alone” and “Home Alone 2” back to NetFlix, and I thought I’d mention what a hit these movies were with our boys over the holidays. My wife and I had, of course, seen both of these movies some time ago. But the boys hadn’t yet seen either of them. To make [...]

Kids Not Safer in SUVs

Written by dad - 4 Comments

According to a recent article published in the journal Pediatrics, kids aren’t any safer in SUVs than in conventional cars. Apparently the size advantage of SUVs is offset by their increased rollover risk. This conclusion is based on a survey of accidents that occurred between 2000-2003 and involved nearly 4,000 kids under the age of [...]

Back to School

Written by mom - 2 Comments

After a two and a half week holiday break, our two oldest kids started back to school today. Thank God. Don’t get me wrong, I love ‘em to death. But they sure have been getting on each other’s (and my) nerves. Too much togetherness and not enough structure, I guess. On top of everything else, [...]
